I saw another doll collector's Apollo in photos after UK BJD con and fell in love with the sculpt. I was really happy that I was able to commision my own from Melonpan.
Her becoming a lion rather than a cat was actually a complete accident. My mum had recently given me some fluffy wool and I thought I'd attempt to crochet my new doll a fluffy hat, so her head wasn't bare. It quickly became apparent though that the wool was far too thick and fluffy. However, I realised that it might make a good mane instead. Instead of abandoning it, continued to crochet and changed course to make it mane-shaped, adding a sort of chin strap to complete the mane and also secure it to her head. I think it turned out really cute!
In real life, male lions usually have manes and females do not, however this isn't always the case - females have been observed to grow manes occasionaly and males to not grow one. Nature is so varied. I have decided though that for my lion she is a trans girl who chooses not to remove her mane and often adds cute hair clips to it for an extra fun look. Maybe sometimes she shaves it for a different style, but she is proud of her mane.
